During the first round of the 2023 NBA draft, deals involving top-10 selections, a 7-foot-5 talent of a generation, and one player unexpectedly missing the lottery were all seen.
In free agency, the 2023–24 season, and beyond, the decisions made by NBA clubs on Thursday will be felt.Victor Wembanyama of France was selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs, as was predicted. The Spurs have optimism about developing a new superstar since Wembanyama is the most anticipated NBA prospect since LeBron James in 2003.Other clubs, like the Charlotte Hornets after selecting Brandon Miller and the Portland Trail Blazers after selecting Scoot Henderson, are hopeful that their choices will give them a similar sense of optimism. When the Houston Rockets selected Amen at choice No. 4 and the Detroit Pistons selected Ausar at selection No. 5, the twin’s Amen and Ausar Thompson became the first brothers in NBA history to be selected in the top five picks in the same draught.
Trades for Jarace Walker, Bilal Coulibaly, and Cason Wallace as well as Dereck Lively II and Cason Wallace between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Mavericks and the Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards also occurred in the first round.
Our basketball experts analyse the evening’s top stories and explain how they will affect the league going ahead.

What about the draught surprised you the most?
Bilal Coulibaly placing at No. 7 looked a few positions early, according to Jeff Borzello. The surprise may not have been Coulibaly beating out competitors like Jarace Walker, Taylor Hendricks, and Cam Whitmore, but rather his ascent in recent months. At this time last year, he was hardly noticed, and early this season, he was still an afterthought. His imagined ceiling continued increasing as word spread over the previous several weeks that he would be selected in the lottery. The Wizards have a lot to gain from their long-term strategy.
Tim Bontemps https://ustimestory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/nba-draf-ustimestory.jpg: The decline in business activity. Only two clubs, the Sacramento Kings at position 24 and the Boston Celtics at position 25 made it all the way out of the first round on draught night. The other two deals that took place in the first round included a pair of traded lottery choices. It was amazing to see the draught unfold very similarly to the way it was set up at the beginning of the night given how open things seemed to be before the draught. The absence of surprises, says Jonathan Givony By NBA draught standards, it largely went as predicted, beginning with Brandon Miller being selected second (the worst-kept NBA secret of the past month) and continuing with the fact that we were able to predict 18 of the top 24 picks to the correct team and 28 of the 30 players who ultimately heard their names called in the first round overall. That doesn’t often occur. The majority of the draught may have been the most predictable we’ve seen in a while, even if a few players did go higher or lower than we predicted.
The major surprise for me was Jett Howard at No. 11, although it wasn’t completely unexpected, according to Jeremy Woo. We were aware that Orlando needed to acquire a shooter, and we gambled on Howard’s ability to develop into a more dynamic all-around scorer while playing with Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and now Anthony Black by selecting him over Gradey Dick or Jordan Hawkins. Although it’s not precisely what I would have done and I didn’t see it coming, this decision stood out in a first round that mostly followed our forecasts.
Besides Gradey Dick’s red sequined jacket, Dave McMenamin’s centre was not chosen in the first round. There is a case to be made that the three greatest players in the league are all centres, including Giannis Antetokounmpo (the superstar of the Bucks), Joel Embiid, who won the regular-season MVP award last year, and reigning Finals MVP Nikola Jokic. However, only three centres were selected in the first thirty picks: Victor Wembanyama at No. 1, Dereck Lively II at No. 12, and Noah Clowney at No. 21. And Wembanyama announced he wants to replace the 4 with a 5 in the next season.
What does Damian Lillard’s future in Portland look like now that Scoot Henderson was selected by the Trail Blazers with the third overall pick?
Whatever it was before to the draught, says Borzello. Regardless of Lillard’s choice, Portland couldn’t pass up a chance to get a player like Henderson. Henderson is a player Portland can develop around if Lillard left. If Lillard remains, the Trail Blazers will strike a balance between attempting to keep up with Lillard’s talent while also looking forward to the development of Anfernee Simons and their other young players.
NBA Draft Bontemps: Not sure. Henderson has a lot of potential. I like Portland’s selection, and I believe that maintaining Henderson was the best decision going ahead. Lillard’s response to the Blazers not selecting an experienced player with significant effect with the third selection to help the team advance more rapidly towards contention is yet to be seen.
Givony NBA Draft : The same as it was yesterday. Lillard participated fully in Portland’s pre-draft process, attending workouts for elite players like Henderson and Miller as well as other prospects, and he was the only one who really understood how improbable it was that the Trail Blazers would ultimately trade this selection.
Woo NBA Draft: The same, most likely. Although I do believe that both parties will ultimately decide to separate ways, I don’t believe that timetable is close, and the Blazers look prepared to rebuild as needed. It might be difficult to decide to move on after trading your franchise player, particularly if they are earning as much as Lillard does.
NBA Draft McCmenamin: Cloudy. It’s to Henderson’s credit that he pitched Lillard on their partnership right away, saying on NBA TV not long after he was selected, “If we combine our games, it will be over [for the rest of the NBA].” After all, the hidden ingredient that may transform a potential into a pro with quick effect is confidence. But no one could understand Lillard for wanting to play with more seasoned colleagues at this point in his career after 11 years in the NBA and with his 33rd birthday coming up next month.
True or false: Victor Wembanyama Borzello will help the San Antonio Spurs win a championship: The Spurs should theoretically have a solid opportunity to win a championship with Wembanyama leading the way since there’s a fair probability he’ll be the greatest player in the NBA at some time. If he even comes close to meeting expectations, he’ll be a player who elevates a club and ultimately someone else in the league wants to play with in an effort to capture a championship.
NBA Draft Bontemps: That’s true, and it’s also not pleasant to cheer for a guy with as much potential as Wenbanyama to lose. In addition, assuming Wenbanyama keeps healthy, he might become the third very remarkable No. 1 choice in Spurs history, behind Tim Duncan and David Robinson, who guided the team to all five of its titles.
NBA Draft Givony: That’s correct, since I wouldn’t wager on Wembanyama’s spirit of competition. And the Spurs front staff has shown that it is capable of assembling a team capable of winning a championship.
NBA Draft Woo: Eventually, yes. Who are we expected to gamble on if we’re not going to back this guy? Wembanyama is distinct from the majority of players, but it’s difficult to determine the chronology or what the future contains. I believe he does it if he has a protracted, mostly healthy career.
Yes, McMenamin. What more could a franchisee possibly want than what Wembanyama offers? His whole character makes a difference, not just his inside-outside skill set or his equally amazing influence on offence and defence. You can tell fate is on this kid’s side when you hear him talk in the weeks before the draught.
At No. 20, Cam Whitmore is slipping to the Houston Rockets.
NBA Draft Borzello: Stunning, especially taking into account the alleged health issues. Even though he missed the first seven games of the season due to an unsatisfactory rookie season, he was still in the running to finish in the top five only a few days ago. For Houston, a drop to 20 is a phenomenal bargain. The 18-year-old Whitmore started to demonstrate late in the season why he was such a highly anticipated talent coming out of high school. Whitmore has physical tools that are as spectacular as anybody in the class.
Bontemps NBA Draft : Predictable, but only because on draught night there is always one player who gets cut, and Whitmore just so happened to be the one this year. But it still made perfect sense for him to end up at Houston, where Ime Udoka, a new coach, favours players who are large and powerful like Whitmore.
Givony NBA Draft : Encouraging Whitmore’s lack of involvement during pre-draft workouts and interviews, as well as throughout his time at Villanova this season, left a lot to be desired, according to clubs that worked him out. He fell for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was his lack of productivity during his one-and-done season on a team that didn’t advance to the NCAA tournament and frequently looked better when he was off the floor. His medicals weren’t perfect, according to several teams I spoke with.
Woo NBA Draft: Regrettable, but OK. This was undoubtedly one of the night’s more significant plotlines, but there had been league-wide rumours all week as teams voiced their worries. On Thursday, teams in the 10- to 20-team range conducted hurried research to determine whether Whitmore might be present and what his overall health appeared to be. When Whitmore fell to the Rockets’ next selection, who had considered him at No. 4, they felt secure enough to take a chance, and they may very well be rewarded for it. He’s arriving in a circumstance where he won’t have to take on an oversized role right away, which may wind up being beneficial to him.
McMenamin NBA Draft: It can be saved. Who will like having a physically fit 6-foot-7, 232-pound prospect with a grudge? Udoka. It’s difficult to think of a better coach to infuse Whitmore with confidence and make him feel wanted in Houston, turning the disappointment he felt waiting to hear his name on Friday night into fuel. Whitmore’s new chapter now begins with a determined Rockets squad, regardless of why he went from seeming to be a draught lock to being passed on 19 times.
Which selection outside of the lottery will have the most effect on his team the following year?
Borzello NBA Draft: Because of his maturity, experience, and offensive skill set, Jaime Jaquez Jr. will be a well-liked choice, but I can’t dismiss Nick Smith Jr. for losing to Charlotte at the age of 27. He entered the season as perhaps the top NBA prospect in college basketball, but his consistency and injury problems made him suffer. But Smith did well for himself since playoff clubs are often searching for more experienced players in the late first round. He will see his old AAU teammate Brandon Miller again, and he won’t have to share LaMelo Ball’s ballhandling and playmaking duties.
NBA Draft Jaquez, Bontemps. The Miami Heat squad may struggle to raise enough money to keep this club together with both Gabe Vincent and Max Strus set to become free agents. The UCLA product is an older prospect who understands how to play. Jaquez seems to be the ideal candidate to enter the starting lineup under coach Erik Spoelstra.
Givony NBA Draft : Due to the plenty of playing time that seems to be available for a club that doesn’t need to be in a hurry to win games, Utah’s backcourt position was cited as one of the most desirable by the majority of agents of green room guard prospects. Keyonte George was chosen 16th overall after fighting over a large field of competitors for this position, perhaps providing him time to start and plenty of offensive opportunities. In particular, if he is ready to buy into playing with the kind of defensive effort coach Will Hardy wants, his scoring instincts, ability to hit pull-up jumpers, and ability to make pocket passes out of the pick-and-roll offer him a great foundation of offensive talent to develop around.Kris Murray, woo. For the Blazers, who don’t have a lot of solid shooters in their frontcourt and are likely looking to plug and play him, he will be able to hit jumpers and earn minutes. Although Keegan, Murray’s twin brother, was a first-team All-Rookie pick for the Kings in 2022-23, I’m not sure whether Murray will have a Keeganesque season, but the things he accomplishes on the court naturally are quite helpful. There is undoubtedly a chance for him here.
Brandin Podziemski, McMenamin. Given his height and exceptional shooting ability, Podziemski simply seems like a player we’ll see stuffing the stat book under coach Steve Kerr’s tactics, even if the Warriors have been hit or miss in the clutch in previous years. Additionally, he should have touched on the squad for the next season with Jordan Poole gone and Donte DiVincenzo potentially going for greater money in free agency.
