Jimmy Carter attended the service where Rosalynn Carter was honored.

Former first lady and humanitarian Rosalynn Carter was feted on Tuesday during a memorial ceremony in Georgia, attended by her husband, former president Jimmy Carter.

There were also all of the surviving past first women, President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and First Lady Jill Biden.

At the age of 96, Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19. Her son revealed last week that her husband of 77 years, Jimmy Carter, who turned 99 this month, was at her side in her dying moments. Since February, Jimmy Carter has received hospice care at home.

Recalling how his mother repaired his ripped Lyndon B. Johnson shirts, enjoyed the campaign road, and pushed him to check himself into treatment for his drug issues, James “Chip” Carter III, their son, paid homage to his mother.

He responded, “She saved my life.”

The fourth and second-oldest Carter kid recalled his mother’s unwavering faith and her love of exploration with great affection.

“I’ve never met a more beautiful woman than my mother, Rosalynn Carter.” Furthermore, it’s attractive to look at,” he said.

As the previous first lady was a “full participant” in guiding the country, Kathryn Cade, vice chair of the Carter Center, remembered. According to Cade, the previous first lady aimed to reduce stigma around mental illness, ease suffering, assist caregivers, and promote equal rights.

“She never sought fame, fortune or accolades for the work that she did,” said Cade. “… In so many different ways, she promoted a more caring society.”

Jimmy Carter attended the ceremony on Tuesday in a wheelchair. His personal health has been unstable, and in February he was placed in hospice care. James Carter III revealed to The Washington Post last week that his father’s deteriorating health meant that none of his suits suited him, so he had to have a new one made.

There are four children, 22 grandkids, and great-grandchildren for the Carter family. The Carter Center noted that the grandkids carried the flag with dignity.

and Rosalynn Carter were wed since Rosalynn was eighteen, and she was an essential collaborator in his political career.

Journalist Judy Woodruff praised the tale, saying, “What a love story.” They had a lot in common, including boldness, curiosity, compassion, intellect, and perhaps a little stubbornness. They had been in love for 77 years. The most difficult period of their marriage, according to her, was when they co-wrote a book.

The daughter of Jimmy and Amy Carter, Amy, revealed a letter Jimmy sent to his wife 75 years ago while serving overseas in the Navy.

“My darling, every time I have ever been away from you, I have been thrilled when I return to discover just how wonderful you are,” said the letter. “… Farewell, sweetheart. Jimmy, until tomorrow.”

During Tuesday’s event, many family members performed, and descendants recited passages from the Bible. Rosalynn Carter’s favorite songs were also played throughout the ceremony by musicians she adored, including as pianist David Osborne, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus, and her close friends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

Shortly before the ceremony, the Bidens, former first lady Michelle Obama, and secretary of state Hillary Clinton arrived at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. Mayor Andre Dickens of Atlanta and Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock of Georgia welcomed them.

Together with former President Bill Clinton, past first ladies Laura Bush and Melania Trump were also present at the funeral on Tuesday.

In his opening comments, Carter’s grandson Jason Carter welcomed Dr. Biden and the previous first ladies before mentioning Jill Biden and Hillary Clinton’s “lovely husbands.” The attendees chuckled at that sentence.

In Plains, Georgia, the Carters’ hometown, there will be a funeral procession on Wednesday to Maranatha Baptist Church, where a memorial ceremony for friends and relatives will be held. After that, her coffin will be moved into a hearse and driven to the Carter family home for a private funeral.
