In the early days after the landslip, the girl’s parents, Timothy Heller, 44, and Beth Heller, 36, as well as her sister, Mara Heller, 16, were found and declared deceased. According to Tim DeSpain, a representative for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, search teams are searching for neighbour Otto Florschutz, 65, and Derek, 12, the third kid who is still missing from the Heller family.Alaska

The wife of Florschutz escaped the catastrophe.

Three houses close to Wrangell, a fishing village with 2,000 people situated on an island about 155 miles south of Juneau, were directly in the line of the landslip.

Under debris in the slide location, according to DeSpain, was the most recent fatality. The bodies were located and recovered by authorities using an excavator and trained dogs.

Images captured the aftermath of the slide, which happened during a period of intense rain and wind: a desolate dirt route, believed to be 450 feet wide, that ran through dense evergreen forests from the top of a neighbouring mountain all the way to the beach. Before the debris field reached the water, it engulfed the coastal roadway.

Because of the unstable and dangerous nature of the location, troopers had originally said that a comprehensive search and rescue operation was not feasible. However, later on, a state transportation agency geologist removed portions of the debris field for searches below ground.
