CINCINNATI – The Packers defeated the Bengals 36-19 in the first preseason game at Paycor Stadium on Friday night. The starters saw some early action, while a few rookies stood out.
In the first quarter, QB Jordan Love connected with WR Romeo Doubs for the offense’s lone touchdown in two series. Love threw for 46 yards on 7 of his 10 completions.
Following an early three-and-out, highlighted by a sack from nickel CB Keisean Nixon, the defensive starters essentially took a break.
The two notable rookies were undrafted RB Emanuel Wilson and fifth-round quarterback Sean Clifford.
Sean Clifford led many scoring drives after recovering from throwing two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six. He completed 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. His touchdown throw went to TE Tyler Davis, who subsequently departed the game due to a knee injury.
Wilson, a Fort Valley State undrafted graduate, scored two touchdown runs of 80 yards each and six carries for 111 yards total. In addition to scoring on a brief TD run, RB Tyler Goodson left the game due to a shoulder injury.
Dontayvion Wicks, a rookie fifth-round selection, topped the receivers in receiving yards with 68 on three receptions, including a 47-yard grab late in the first half that helped set up a score. On three receptions, WR Samori Toure gained 56 yards.
Carrington Valentine, a rookie CB selected in the seventh round, maintained his impressive training camp play on defence by picking up another interception and making more pass breakups. S The other interception for Green Bay came from Dallin Leavitt, who was assisted by undrafted rookie edge rusher Brenton Cox Jr.

After winning the toss, the Bengals decided to defer. For the Packers, Jordan Love began as quarterback. Aaron Jones caught his first throw in the flat for a gain of six.

On third-and-7, Cincinnati passed for 14 yards to Andrei Iosivas before picking up 32 yards with a throw to Trenton Irwin.
On second-and-seven, Carrington Valentine made a strong open-field tackle for no gain, and after Devonte Wyatt almost sacked Browning on third down, Cincinnati opted for a 38-yard field goal.Â
Sean Clifford, a native of Cincinnati, replaced Love after he completed 7 of 10 passes for 46 yards and a score on two offensive series (112.9 passer rating). Clifford moved Green Bay to the Bengals’ 27 by ending the first quarter with a 15-yard completion to Reed on third-and-4.
At halftime, the Bengals are down 21-16 against the Packers.
The Packers’ second quarter started with Clifford causing a 23-yard defensive pass interference call on Allan George, who was covering Reed’s corner route. Runyan was playing centre for the Packers at the time.
With 14:05 remaining in the first half, running back Tyler Goodson extended Green Bay’s advantage to 14-3 with a 1-yard TD run on the next play.
Chris Evans of Cincinnati completed a 33-yard run to return the Bengals to Green Bay territory. The third-and-7 pass intended for Iosivas was intercepted by Valentine. With 11:13 remaining in the half, Evan McPherson kicked a 52-yard field goal to reduce Cincinnati’s lead to 14-6.
To begin Green Bay’s fourth series, Clifford delivered a 15-yard throw over the middle to Malik Heath with Zach Tom now at centre.
With 9:16 remaining in the half, Green Bay led 14-13 after Domenique Davis hit Clifford as he was attempting a third-and-6 pass, which led to a Tycen Anderson interception that was recovered for a 43-yard touchdown by Tycen Anderson.

Starting at the Green Bay 9, Clifford connected with Dontayvion Wicks on third-and-7 for 19 yards to extend the Packers’ two-minute drive. With 1:04 remaining in the half, Anderson blocked a throw intended for Tucker Kraft, which led to Clifford being intercepted twice.
Following his interception of Browning’s misthrown pass, rookie cornerback Carrington Valentine returned the ball to his team’s offence. Clifford successfully capitalised on the error by finding Wicks for a 47-yard gain by slipping a throw between coverage.
With 25 seconds remaining, Clifford ran for 13 yards to convert a first-and-goal situation from the Bengals’ 6. He then connected with Tyler Davis for a 6-yard touchdown, giving the Packers a 21-16 lead.
