Summer time travel at the last minute is offering the greatest discounts in years.

Towards the end of the season, travelers are finally finding cheaper flights and rooms after paying eye-popping prices during the post-pandemic tourist boom. But flexibility is helpful.

Refused to go on a summer vacation? It’s possible that you can still get one at a reasonable price.

Since the outbreak, airports have seen record numbers of travelers; yet, after scrambling to expand capacity, American airlines are already overbooked.

According to travel agencies and industry experts, many are reducing rates to fill them, making cheap flights more accessible than they have been in years.

As costs are already so low, deals are simpler to locate this summer, according to Hayley Berg, head economist at Hopper, a travel booking website.

According to government inflation figures, flights were at least 5% less expensive generally as of June than they were the previous year. Hopper found extremely low domestic round-trip tickets this month, including $69 for Chicago to Baltimore and $82 for New York to Nashville. Hopper calculated that domestic airfares for August are down around 6% from a year ago.

Not only are airfares down, but so are the rates of hotel rooms and automobile rentals. According to government data, they were around 6% and 3% lower year over year, respectively, and are currently roughly level in the majority of cities on Priceline.

These reductions align with a larger value campaign this summer and open up the map to late-season vacationers. Restaurant companies, ranging from P.F. Chang’s to McDonald’s, are using enticing promos to lure in thrifty patrons. The strategy is mainly succeeding, as seen by the recent sales of significant stores, which have supported consumer spending and the overall economy.

arranging a vacation This year is shaping up better for those who put things off.

Debra Banton, 61, and her daughter Rachel, 26, made travel arrangements on July 26 for a two-week abroad trip.

“We always plan well in advance, never at the last minute,” Banton, a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, stated. Since Rachel has never gone to Europe and is getting married in May of next year, they decided that this is their best chance. However, Rachel works full-time while going to school, leaving little time for leisure.

Kimberly Hilliard, their travel advisor with Front Porch Travel, located in Annapolis, Maryland, stated, “With just four weeks’ planning time, I was able to secure the last few rooms at some fabulous resorts in Greece and get them a great deal on business-class air to Athens.”

The current end-of-summer season offers a “unique window” for travelers who haven’t booked far in ahead, according to Jesse Neugarten, CEO and creator of Dollar Flight Club, even though costs usually decrease as October approaches.

According to the flight alert website, the average cost of a domestic ticket is $212 and the average cost of an international flight from the United States is $401, which is a 29% decrease from the same period last year.

“I’ve been able to get very low airfare for last-minute trips for clients with a little flexibility in their travel dates,” Flyaway Travel owner Ashley D’Aristotile said from her Orlando, Florida, location.

Going’s flight expert Lousson Smith concurs, saying that “anything under $200 this late in the game is a decent deal, but if you’re flexible, you can find something really nice under $150 nonstop from major markets.”

During the post-pandemic vacation boom, U.S. ticket expenses to Europe skyrocketed, but according to Hopper, foreign airfares have dropped 9% since last summer. According to Hopper, round-trip tickets from Boston to Dublin, for instance, have been available for as little as $415 this month, while there are $461 choices available between Chicago and Paris.

Priceline reports that the Southeast is home to some of the greatest deals nationally, with Miami and Nashville ranking among the “most affordable” cities for August.

“You can take advantage of lower prices in certain Southern states like Florida and Tennessee for families who still have several weeks before school officially begins,” said Christina Bennett, a Priceline consumer travel specialist.

“Markets and individual hotels will be looking to fill their rooms by offering last-minute deals and discounts,” according to Jan Freitag, national director of hospitality analytics at real estate data company CoStar Group, about lodging.

According to him, “room rates are not up a whole lot in general and on average,” and occupancy is declining in some places. According to CoStar statistics, the average daily room rate increased by 1.5% on average in June, less than the 3% annual rate of inflation overall. In the final week of July, the rate increased by 1.3% on average.

Deal seekers, however, will need to be quick, according to Freitag: “A deal might be offered on Wednesday for that Saturday, so the question is: Are you willing to book in advance or at the last minute?”

That kind of desire has been particularly strong lately, said to Chirag Panchal, founder of the Dallas-based travel agency Ensuite Collection.

“There are a lot more last-minute travel requests than usual, and the availability seems unusual for this time of year,” he stated. “We’re seeing excellent availability in locations like Colorado and New York City, and many hotels are offering free breakfast, room upgrades, kid-friendly extras, and complimentary overnight stays.”

In order to act quickly, experts advise enrolling in one of the free fare-alert systems provided by several travel sites if you’re ready to leave and have a few places in mind. Alternatively, look for the least expensive trips from your closest airport using a site like Google Flights. Furthermore, even if they charge their own fees, many travel agencies have access to discounted rates and packages that might not be found on online booking platforms.

If you are unable to fit in a summer vacation before August ends, don’t worry. Considering that the season doesn’t truly finish until three weeks following Labor Day, a lot of travel-related deals seem likely to persist.

“As September approaches, I’m seeing a lot of places with reduced packages,” stated Jennifer Byrne, CEO of Tropical Travelers, a Malvern, Pennsylvania-based firm.
