Lula, the president of Brazil, had emergency brain surgery.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, had emergency surgery to stop a brain bleed.

An Associated Press translation of a medical statement posted on the 79-year-old socialist leader’s official X account on Tuesday stated that the treatment was performed after an MRI revealed a “intracranial hemorrhage.”

According to a translation of the medical statement, Lula is “well” after the successful operation and is presently being watched in the critical care unit of Sirio Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo, in southeast Brazil. It further stated that he was moved from Brasilia, the capital, where he underwent an MRI on Monday.

Lula suffered a gash on the back of his head, right above his neck, after falling at home earlier this year. According to a translation of the hospital’s medical report, doctors think the two instances are connected.

According to a statement from his office at the time, Lula was obliged to postpone his scheduled journey to Kazan, a city in southwest Russia, for the 2024 BRICS conference because of that previous tragedy.
