Amid growing rumors that she would be chosen to fill a vacancy in the Senate, Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, stated Sunday night that she will resign from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
Trump, who joined the RNC as co-chair in March with her father-in-law’s support, stated on X on Sunday that she plans to resign at the next meeting of the RNC after she has accomplished her three objectives for the group.
Our three main objectives at the RNC were to: 1) break all fundraising records 2) assemble the greatest force of attorneys and poll watchers to guarantee the integrity of the election, and 3) mobilize millions of Americans and voters with low levels of preparation for early voting. In the post, she stated, “We completed all three.” A request for comment late Sunday was not immediately answered by the RNC.

The president-elect has stated that he will pick Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio to be secretary of state, and Trump has been mentioned as a potential alternative. She has not denied the prospect, and she has been cited as someone the Trump family would want to see take the position by a number of their associates.
She told Fox News last month that it would be an honor if she were called upon to serve in another position. “I haven’t been asked yet, but if it were put to me, I would definitely give it serious thought.”
Rubio’s successor will be chosen by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a longtime political opponent who faced Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

According to reports, DeSantis is also being considered to succeed the troubled defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth. Last week, a source informed NBC News that DeSantis and the president-elect had a direct conversation about the matter.
“Trump spoke with the governor and wants him to do it,” according to a person with knowledge of the exchange.
According to NBC News last week, Hegseth’s candidacy is in doubt because up to six Republican senators are hesitant to back him in light of revelations about his handling of women and drinking accusations.
Hegseth has claimed that the meeting with the woman who accused him of sexual assault was consensual and has pledged not to back down as Trump’s choice. He has also denied that he mistreated women. When questioned Tuesday night with the drinking accusations, he remained silent.
