According to a source familiar with the decision, General Motors fired off about 1,000 workers on Friday as the manufacturer looks to reduce expenses and realign priorities in the face of shifting market circumstances.

The affected employees were informed of the layoffs throughout the company on Friday morning. According to the individual, who agreed to discuss the decision on condition of anonymity, some were the result of subpar performance, while others were a part of a study to rearrange priorities by the carmaker.

According to the source, the bulk of the affected employees worked at the automaker’s global technical center in Warren, Michigan, which is located in suburban Detroit. Only a few hourly workers were affected by the layoffs.

A GM representative acknowledged the layoffs but would not say how many people were affected.

In an emailed comment, GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly stated, “We need to optimize for speed and excellence in order to win in this competitive market.” This entails working effectively, making sure our staff is organized properly, and concentrating on our company’s key goals.

We have reduced a few team members as part of our ongoing endeavor. We are appreciative of everyone who contributed to building a solid foundation that puts GM in a position to dominate the sector going ahead.

The layoffs on Friday come after GM’s software and services division let off over 1,000 paid workers in August.

At the end of last year, GM had 76,000 paid employees worldwide. This includes over 53,000 paid workers in the United States.

The automaker’s hourly workers are represented by the United Auto Workers union, which did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
