Following a stroke, Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of one of the most well-known political families in America, was admitted to the hospital, her family said on Tuesday.
The 96-year-old mother of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and wife of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy suffered a stroke on Thursday while she was asleep. She is now getting medical attention at a hospital, as said in a statement by her grandson, former Massachusetts Representative Joe Kennedy III.
The statement reads, “She is surrounded by family, getting the best care possible, and is comfortable.” She is a powerful lady who has had an extraordinarily full life, as you may know. We are here to take care of her.
According to her grandson, she enjoyed spending time with her huge family throughout the summer.
11 children were born to Ethel Kennedy between 1951 and 1968. Six months after her husband was murdered and killed at a Los Angeles hotel, she gave birth to her final child.
She assisted in establishing a human rights center named in honor of her husband, committed to carrying on his legacy, a few months after Robert F. Kennedy passed away.
The highest civilian award bestowed by the US government, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was granted to Ethel Kennedy in 2014 by former President Barack Obama in recognition of her contributions to social justice, environmental preservation, and human rights.
