According to the FDA, the contamination has not been linked to any illnesses or customer complaints.
Due to potential listeria contamination, over a dozen vegetables, including peppers, cucumbers, and squash, have been recalled.
Produce sold at some Walmart and Aldi stores is included in the recall, the US Food and Drug Administration announced in a press statement on Monday. It’s an extension of the July 12 recall at Wiers Farm.
A restricted quantity of whole cucumbers and packaged salad cucumbers were the subject of the initial recall. The FDA said that Wiers Farm “handled and distributed” the product; it was not cultivated or harvested by the firm.
The increased recall includes retail packaged products such squash, serranos, jalapeños, green beans, poblanos, and cubanelles. It also includes organic bell peppers. The products were offered for sale in Delaware, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Connecticut in Aldi and Walmart stores. You may view the complete list here.
“ALDI prioritizes the integrity and safety of the products it sells,” a news statement from the business stated. “Customers are advised to discard any products affected by this recall right away or return them to their local store for a complete refund if they have any.”
The tainted items have been taken out of the shops, and Walmart is “working with the supplier to investigate the cause,” an official from the firm told NBC News on Friday.
The representative declared, “Our customers’ health and safety are always our top priority.”
Bulk herbs like parsley and cilantro, as well as vegetables sold by the pound or individually, have also been recalled.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria, a bacterium that may contaminate numerous foods, most frequently causes illness in pregnant women, newborns, elderly persons, and those with compromised immune systems.
According to the CDC, it can result in gastrointestinal disorders such diarrhea and vomiting, which usually appear 24 hours after exposure. The symptoms of the bacteria might include fever, headache, stiff neck, disorientation, loss of balance, and seizures if they extend outside of the intestines. According to CDC estimates, foodborne illnesses are the third largest cause of mortality in the US when it comes to foodborne illnesses.
The FDA stated that no illnesses or complaints from customers have been documented as a result of the contamination.
