Following a months-long dispute between the corporation and Alexandre de Moraes, the minister of Brazil’s federal supreme court, Elon Musk’s X is finally making a comeback.
The business stated in a post on X from its worldwide government affairs account, “X is proud to return to Brazil.” Throughout the entire process, it was crucial to grant access to our invaluable platform to tens of millions of Brazilians. Everywhere we work, we will keep up our defense of the right to free expression while staying inside the bounds of the law.
On August 31, X was placed under suspension in Brazil per a ruling by de Moraes, which was affirmed by a group of other justices.
“The company complied with the conditions stipulated by the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, and the platform may once again be used by Brazilians,” the Supremo Tribuno Federal, the highest court in Brazil, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The reason for the suspension was that Musk, who owns X and serves as its chief technical officer, disregarded orders from a Brazilian court to delete or restrict certain user accounts or information that the court determined to be illegal under federal law.
Brazil has implemented stringent internet rules aimed at preventing the propagation of hate speech, violent incitement, political disinformation, and anything detrimental to democratic institutions on the internet. Additionally, the nation mandates that internet companies hire a lawyer in Brazil.
